I came to the practice of mindfulness meditation in 1994 on the recommendation of a friend. I felt my life was at a crossroads. I had been trying and using a variety of strategies to deal with life’s challenges. For example, I was an avid swimmer. What I observed was I felt great after the exercise; however, the impact was often temporary. I needed to find a practice that would be more enduring and also to help me learn more about myself.
At around the same time, I became familiar with the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, who has been instrumental in bringing the practice of mindfulness to the west. His best selling book “Full Catastrophe Living - Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness was my catalyst for the exploration of bringing mindfulness into my life.
With practice, I found the practice of mindfulness meditation to be instrumental in finding some balance in life and finding some peace and calmness. In the end, it isn’t what happens that is important, but, it is how I handle it that determines my state of mind. Mindfulness meditation has been absolutely invaluable in moving in this direction
I started teaching mindfulness meditation in 2005 and I model my work on Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s approach. I also am a certified yoga instructor and I am passionate about bringing the practice of mindfulness to yoga. I believe that mindfulness is a human capacity that anyone can develop and apply in meeting life’s challenges.
