Athleticism, health, and wellness have always been an integral part of Kevin’s personal and professional life, whether it be in his early years as a bike racer, in his career as a Doctor of Chinese Medicine, or in his love of fitness and activity. Early on, the world of Yoga offered an opportunity to incorporate “stretch” into his physical routine, something that Kevin, like so many other athletes, otherwise found difficult to commit to regularly. It came naturally to Kevin in some respects; he excelled at many of the poses that required strength and stamina, but fumbled through those requiring flexibility and grace.
Over time, Kevin stopped trying so hard to be as ‘good’ at the pose as the people around him. He started paying attention to the breath. He tried to move like a cat rather than a bull. He imagined moving with graceful fluidity from pose to pose. It was through this change in mindset that Kevin gained a newfound appreciation for the importance of balance, stability and grace not only in a physical movement practice, but in everyday life. He stopped looking at his teachings as strictly “yoga”, and instead began to focus on the importance of moving with purpose, maintaining healthy alignment, and building strength and balance.
With the opening of Yoga Mandala over ten years ago, Kevin created a space for people to come together to laugh, sweat, work, rest, breathe, escape and accept. It is a space that is welcoming to everyone, irrespective of experience, goals, age, physical fitness, and the like…Kevin’s classes are never the same. They are constantly changing in order to create classes that will benefit the uniqueness of the people he sees before him. Expect to be challenged physically and sometimes mentally. Expect movement patterns that incorporate a variety of systems, including yoga. Expect to learn to move your body in ways that make your everyday life more livable. Expect to work hard, and to have fun. Expect the unexpected.
